SNL – Josh Hutcherson/HAIM

Standard

Last night’s SNL was an it’s almost Thanksgiving, let’s just phone this in episode. Josh did the best he could but this was no one’s best episode. It’s okay, man. Jennifer Lawrence’s SNL hosting gig didn’t go great either. All right, let’s dive into it.

Josh’s cast member Hunger Games monologue was pretty good, led by Kate McKinnon’s perfect Effie Trinket.

What to Check Out on Netflix This Weekend

Looking for movies to watch this weekend? Here are some new additions to Netflix streaming and some older favorites you might want to check out.

Only God Forgives – At this point, if you don’t expect indie intensity from Ryan Gosling, you should. Only God Forgives is from the same director as the spectacular Drive, so if you didn’t like Drive, skip this. What Gosling lacks as far as dialogue in this film, he makes up for in violence. This has been on my gotta check out list for some time.

What Maisie Knew – Are you in need of an Alexander Skarsgard fix while True Blood is away? Try out this indie about a couple going through divorce. Reviews were pretty decent when it came out and its rating on Netflix is high.

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – How about a complete change of pace? Ponies! For the kids or bronies in your life, see what your favorite Ponyville resident would look like as a person. Sort of. It’s an hour and 15 minutes so if you’re babysitting this weekend or want to catch up before Saturday’s all new MLP premiere, check it out.

Secret of the Wings – Disney’s Frozen comes out next week, which means it’s the perfect time to pregame with this cute Tinkerbell movie, also about an endless winter. How does Tinkerbell have a sister? Watch and find out.

Man on the Moon – So, the rumor that Andy Kaufman is still alive turned out to be a hoax. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this great movie about his life, starring Jim Carrey.

Super – James Gunn (Dawn of the Dead from 2004, Slither, Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy) wrote and directed this awesome dark superhero movie starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. I highly recommend this one.

Hit and Run – Written, directed by and starring Dax Shepard, this underrated movie is a good Saturday night choice. Annie (Kristen Bell) thinks she knows her boyfriend (Dax Shepard) but it turns out he used to be a getaway driver for some pretty bad people who are looking for him. Also starring a totally different Bradley Cooper, this movie is funny and fast paced.

Can’t Hardly Wait – An older school favorite of mine with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry and Seth Green. High school is over and now all that’s left is the big party. Look out for cameos from lesser known actors at the time like Sara Rue, Eric Balfour, Selma Blair and Jason Segel.

FX Networks

There’s plenty to choose from on TV tonight. If you’re looking for intense drama, witches or a Game of Thrones parody, I recommend setting your DVR for these shows.

Criminal Minds (CBS, 9pm EST) – Tonight, skeletons of murdered women are found in a backyard. The team investigates this dark family secret.

Law and Order: SVU (NBC, 9pm EST) – It gets personal for Rollins when her friend is part of a rape investigation, pitting her against Benson and Amaro.

American Horror Story: Coven (FX, 10pm EST) – The Axeman is here, Kyle is in the greenhouse, Cordelia’s on an endless and unwilling vision quest and of course, someone is back from the dead. I wouldn’t miss this one.

South Park (Comedy Central, 10pm EST) – Tonight’s episode picks up where last week’s Game of Thrones episode left off. If you missed it, don’t worry. Comedy Central is reairing it at 9:30. Will the dragons finally show up? Will Randy survive Black Friday? There’s only one way to find out. Or, you could come back here tomorrow and I’ll tell you all about it.

Don’t know what to check out tonight? Here are my recommendations.

Agents of SHIELD (ABC, 8pm EST) – Tonight’s episode starts right after what went down in Thor: The Dark World. Star Trek fans, take notice. Jonathan Frakes, good old Number One, directed this episode.

Supernatural (CW, 9pm EST) – Drama? Oh yes. Dean helps an old friend hunt a ghost and information about Dean shocks Sam. What is it? Better tune in to find out.

Sons of Anarchy (FX, 10pm EST) – The mess with Gaalan and the IRA finally comes to a head with the big transport job. Will it all go according to plan? Of course not. It’s Sons of Anarchy. There are only three episodes left this season and Kurt Sutter says not to miss this one.

On TV Tonight: Sunday, November 17

Tonight’s the big night if you’re into arguing women and zombies. Here’s what I recommend checking out.

Real Housewives of Atlanta (Bravo, 8pm EST) – The drama continues as Kandi’s fiancé, Todd, continues to be scrutinized by virtually everyone Kandi knows. Also, Cynthia worries about her surgery and Kenya decides to move. PS – Phaedra’s on Watch What Happens Live at 11 tonight.

The Walking Dead (AMC, 9pm EST) – Hold on to your hats, everyone. Especially you, Carl. The Governor is back. Odds are he hasn’t worked out his severe mental issues since he’s been gone so this episode is not one to miss. The episode is also called Live Bait so something tells me it’s not going to be all sunshine and farming at the prison tonight.

Talking Dead (AMC, 10:01pm EST) – Tonight’s guests are the Governor himself, David Morrissey, and Ike Barinholtz from the old MadTV and Hulu’s awesome animated series, The Awesomes. If you have to crash early, be sure to set your DVR for this one.
